BRENNER SCORE BIG MAN, TAKES SPRINT MIDGET, ROOKIE TITLES.  MARSDEN, MUSSER SHARE DIRT CHAMP SPOTLIGHT.
FREY SPORTS-WOMAN OF THE YEAR!

(June 18, 2000 - Reading, PA)  No it’s, and’s or but’s. it was one hell of a season!  The SCale Openwheel Racing Enthusiasts organization registered its finest campaign in almost every category while a rookie from Manheim stole most of the thunder from the veteran contingent to highlight the 1999-2000 slot wars episode.  Much-traveled Steve Brenner, in his first season with SCORE, proved to be the quickest learner in the history of open wheel slot car racing in Berks County as he recorded nine victories as a rookie. His effort not only gave him the obvious Rookie of-the Year honors, but netted the point championships in the USAC sprint and midget divisions as well. Brenner captured his initial checkered flag on November 17.the last race of 1999, then went on a tear for eight more from January through May.  The big man from Manheim ran away with the midget title with six wins in nine races, however he waited until the final night of the season to grab the sprint division laurels.

The dirt champ division title seemed to be the championship nobody wanted as the winner of the first two events, John Willman, missed the next five programs. In his absence, Brion Hassler assumed the point lead only to miss four races himself. Afterwards, both Tim Musser and Dana Marsden traded the top spot until their baffle ended in a dead-heat for the divisional honors.

Brenner’s “team-mate”, Sue Frey, earned the Sportsman of the Year award. Her trademark became that of running a clean race, rarely making or causing a miscue. Frey finished in the top five in all three divisions and was runner-up for Rookie of the Year. SCQRE ,in its fifth season, hosted nine feature events in each division for a total of 27 races. Eighteen drivers participated in SCORE programs with a record average turnout of 7.7 entrants per show. During 1999-2000,six different drivers grabbed checkered flags. Brenner won 9 times while Wilman, appearing in just ten events, won 6. Marsden was victorious on 4 occassions, Jeff Hassler 3,Musser 3,and Dave Balloch.  The sprint division recorded an organization high of 17 drivers on its roll call as the dirt champs led all divisions with an average field of 8 contestants. The dirt champs also had the most winners with 6.  The final point standings for the midgets were previously posted for the Apr11 14 program as the sprint and dirt champ standings were posted for the May 10 event.  SCORE director Dana Marsden would like to thank all competitors for their efforts in making 1999-2000 a banner season for the organization. An awards party is planned for July.

Our 1999-2000 Score Season Started with a BIG BANG!

(Sept.22 - Boulder Lake) The 1999-00 season got off to a great start as 11 dnvers, including three rookies, took part in the opening event at South Mountain. John Wiliman copped the first checkered flag in the USAC Sprint division by edging Steve Brenner and Mike Fenicchia, both making their initial SCORE programs. This race marked the first time a female has run in SCORE as Sue Frey finished sixth. In the USAC Midget division, Jeff Hassler sped to victory over Wiliman and Dana Marsden.

Fourth Score Season Solid

Scale Open-wheel Racing Enthusiasts (SCORE) was founded in 1995 to provide a venue for 1/25th scale wingless sprint, dirt champ, and midget slot car racing. The Berks County (PA) organization sanctions events at three short tracks on a bi-weekly schedule. Cars are homemade using Parma Womp frames with brass rod cages. Car appearance and dimensions are based upon USAC guidelines. In an attempt to keep the racing affordable, SCORE mandates “spec” motors and tires.

Sprints rounding the turn The Battle of the Best

The 1998-99 campaign saw 14 drivers compete during the 22 program schedule.  SCORE competition, as usual, was excellent each night and provided exciting finishes for the point championships.  In the sprint car division, there were 6 different winners in the 7 events run.  Going into the season finale, the “Flying Dutchman Classic”, it appeared as though it would be just a battle between Dave Balloch and Tim Musser for the title, however, Dana Marsden turned in a stellar performance to pass Musser and tie Balloch for the championship.  The dirt champ point race was even more intense as three drivers entered the last event within a mere 5 points of each other.  ”lron Mike” Lengel’s second place finish in the “Boston Louie 100” topped Marsden and Jeff Hassler to earn the divisional crown.

For most of the season:  Balloch, Marsden, and Lengel vied for the midget title.  Then with only two races to go, Lengel missed an event to help in the pits with the IRL’s Steve Knapp. On the final night, Marsden tried to duplicate the magic he used at the sprint car coda, but this time fell short as Balloch captured the laurels.  Veteran slot car driver Jeff Hassler took two checkered flags and was in the thick of the dirt champ quest in his first season with SCORE to garner “Rookie of the Year” honors. Young Josh Musser went through the frustrations of a novice, yet persisted and learned with such considerable composure to be named “Sportsman of the Year”.  SCORE will begin the 1999-00 season either in late September or early October.
